Foundation design coordinated for projects across Worcestershire

The right foundation type depends on the ground conditions, the load of the proposed structure and the proximity of trees or other features. LateShield coordinates ground investigations and structural engineering to ensure foundations are properly designed for the specific site conditions, and manages the Building Regulations approval process.

Process

How it works

01

Initial enquiry

Contact LateShield with details of the site and proposed structure. We will review the information and discuss the scope of the ground investigation and foundation design.

02

Ground investigation

We coordinate a ground investigation to assess the soil conditions and identify any constraints on foundation design.

03

Foundation design

We coordinate the structural engineering design of the foundations, including specification of the foundation type, depth and reinforcement.

04

Building Regulations

We coordinate the Building Regulations application and ensure the foundation design is approved before construction begins.

05

Construction and inspection

We coordinate Building Control inspections at the foundation stage and confirm the works have been constructed in accordance with the approved design.

Getting started

What to send us

Send us whatever you have. You do not need everything — share what is available and we will work with it.

Site location and any existing surveys
Details of the proposed structure and loading
Any existing ground investigation reports
Details of trees or vegetation near the proposed foundation
Budget range if known

Foundation design and structural engineering are undertaken by suitably qualified and insured professionals under an agreed written appointment. LateShield acts as the principal point of contact and coordinates the process. LateShield does not itself provide structural engineering or regulated design services.

Ask a question

Strip foundations are the most common foundation type for house extensions in the UK. They consist of a continuous strip of concrete beneath the load-bearing walls. The required depth depends on the ground conditions and the proximity of trees.

Tree roots can desiccate shrinkable clay soils, causing the ground to shrink and the foundation to settle. Building Regulations require foundations near trees to be taken to a depth where the soil is not affected by root activity. A structural engineer will specify the required depth based on the tree species and distance.

A raft foundation is a reinforced concrete slab that spans the full footprint of the building. It is used where the ground conditions are poor or variable, or where a conventional strip foundation would be impractical. Raft foundations are designed by structural engineers.

A ground investigation is advisable for most new build projects and extensions, particularly on sites with a history of contamination, unusual ground conditions or proximity to trees. LateShield can coordinate a ground investigation as part of the project.
